Castello di Vezio above Varenna: is the climb right for your visit?

Castello di Vezio is close to Varenna in the way hillside places are close: visible, tempting and distinctly uphill. The castle is in Vezio, in the municipality of Perledo, above the eastern shore of Lake Como. It can be a rewarding addition to a Varenna day, but it is not an extension of the flat waterfront promenade. Decide whether the ascent suits your group before choosing the view. That small piece of honesty makes the visit much more enjoyable.
The journey begins before the castle gate
The castle’s own directions describe a steep walking route from Varenna and an alternative approach called Scabium, beginning opposite Villa Monastero. The operator gives indicative walking times, but they are not guarantees for every visitor. Fitness, pauses, footwear, heat and wet surfaces can all change the experience. Plan the ascent as a walk in its own right. Leave extra time to find the correct start, follow local signs and arrive without racing the final admission time.
A ferry arrival at Varenna is still an arrival at the lakeside, not at the castle. If you are coming from Bellagio or Menaggio, add the walk to your boat journey. Likewise, a train arrival at Varenna-Esino does not remove the hill. Our Varenna village guide helps you understand the lower part of the visit. Keep the descent and the next departure in your plan rather than treating the outward journey as the only transfer that matters.
The official directions also explain a road approach to Vezio followed by walking. That should not be interpreted as step-free access to every part of the castle. If stairs, uneven surfaces or gradients are a concern, ask the operator about the actual route and facilities before travelling. A taxi booking does not by itself establish that the interior is suitable. Our Lake Como mobility guide offers broader planning questions without declaring every attraction accessible.
Check the season, then check the day
At the time of this October 2026 review, the official timetable lists shorter autumn visiting hours and a final admission twenty minutes before closing. Later in the year, weather and seasonal arrangements become still more important. Consult the live hours page rather than saving this article as a permanent timetable. If rain is forecast, check whether the site will open and consider the walking surface. A spectacular photograph is not a reason to ignore an uncomfortable or unsuitable climb.
One older expectation needs correcting: the operator says falconry activity is permanently suspended. Do not book a day here on the assumption that there will be a flying display, even if an old image or legacy form suggests one. The reliable planning information is the current notice. Ticket purchase and a castle visit should not be described as including an activity the site no longer offers.
Read the view before collecting photographs
From the open viewpoints, use the lake’s branching shape to orient yourself. The castle’s interpretation identifies the Bellagio peninsula and the two southern arms. Compare that broad geography with the practical map you used for the journey. Water can look like one continuous open space while its routes, landings and transfer times remain very specific. This is a good place to understand why visiting Como, Varenna and Bellagio is not the same as moving between adjacent city neighbourhoods.
The site contains historical fabric alongside later visitor displays and artistic features. Keep those categories distinct. A sculpture is not evidence of a medieval custom simply because it stands in a castle garden. A dramatic origin story also deserves a different level of confidence from a dated document or surviving wall. Enjoy the atmosphere while asking what the interpretation actually establishes. The result can be both more accurate and more interesting than treating every detail as equally ancient.
Keep the rest of the day modest
Pairing the castle with Villa Monastero is an option to assess against current openings and your energy, not an obligation. If travelling from Milan, distinguish that city departure from a trip beginning on the lake; our sibling guide to a Lake Como day trip from Milan makes the larger journey clear. Compare our Lake Como walking experiences by their actual starting town and terrain. A Varenna day with one well-chosen climb can be richer than a crowded itinerary of places you reach only long enough to leave.
